Social and Emotional Learning Takes Center Stage (SEL)

In 2025, Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) will be just as important as subjects like math, science, or literature. As the world becomes more convenient, we sometimes forget to reflect internally, and our emotions can be neglected. That’s why we’re bringing feelings back to the forefront! 

Research shows that students perform better academically and daily when they learn to manage their emotions. SEL focuses on helping students understand their feelings, develop compassion, and build positive relationships. After all, it’s all about creating an academic environment where students feel safe expressing their color, sharing their thoughts and feelings, and connecting with peers.

Here are several strategies to effectively integrate the SEL approach in a STEAM class: 

1. Have students engage in projects that require collaboration and creativity while incorporating moments for emotional reflection. After completing a project in class, encourage them to share their experiences and feelings about the whole process of making the project. Ask guiding questions like, “What challenges did you face as a team, and how did you overcome them?” 

1. Use storytelling and role-playing to explore emotions: Students can use platforms like Scratch to incorporate scientific concepts or engineering principles. This approach helps them enhance their narrative writing, storytelling, and imagination. 

1. Teach them about empathy, respect, and communication through STEAM challenges: Introduce them to topics like the ethics of artificial intelligence or environmental responsibility. Teachers can also facilitate discussions on ethical dilemmas in STEAM fields. For example, while discussing AI, ask questions like, “How should we ensure that AI is used responsibly and ethically?”

Nano Learning is a bite-sized, focused learning experience. This learning method typically lasts just a few minutes per lesson. It is not entirely new, as it was adapted in platforms like Duolingo years ago. Yet, by 2025, these innovative ways of learning and teaching will become a norm, allowing students to absorb knowledge faster and easier than ever before and making education accessible to everyone.
