Meet Sydney: Our 10-Year-Old Tech Genius 

Sydney is a brilliant and ambitious 10-year-old girl who grew from a curious beginner into a confident tech genius. Joining TechTrain with her sister, Sydney was initially unsure about coding. However, she started working her way with our interactive program, STEAM Discovery, where she took up digital literacy and block coding on Scratch. Building on that foundation, she further explored her creativity further in our GDevelop Game Design World program, designing 2D games with the powerful engine of GDevelop5.

“At first, it was a bit overwhelming,” she admitted, “but as I kept learning, I figured out how to make my character move, jump, and sometimes even fly!”

Building confidence and skills

Perhaps the biggest change Sydney noticed in herself was her confidence in technology. “TechTrain helped me a lot with how I create things on the computer,” she explained. “I no longer feel off or weird. In the past, I would get frustrated when things didn’t work, but now I know how to use the computer better.” She laughed as she recalled, “Stuff getting destroyed doesn’t happen as much anymore!”

Along the way, Sydney enjoyed working with several coding languages. She started with Scratch, which is a block-based programming language that allowed her to understand the very basics of coding through visual blocks. It laid the ground for her next challenges, where she explored GDevelop5. This tool allowed her to create 2D games, utilizing visual scripting to develop game logic without having to write complex code.

Impact on school subjects

Sydney also noticed that her learning at TechTrain positively influenced her performance in other school subjects. “It helps me with most subjects,” she shared. “While some don’t really connect with using a laptop, others benefit a lot from what I’ve learned in TechTrain.”

Her newfound skills have not only increased her confidence in technology but have also made her approach her studies with a more creative mindset.

The learning environment

Sydney describes the experience with TechTrain’s teachers and the learning environment as very good.. “Learning at TechTrain is really fun, and it helps me with a lot of stuff. The teacher was nice, and he was very, very funny. It was so much fun and I really loved it!”
